Before the tournament’s start on Friday, we asked DEAC Basketball Academy’s sports director, Sándor Berényi.
On Friday, the 2024 Cívis Cup will kick off with eight teams participating. The organizers have put special emphasis on this year’s tournament. In addition to high-ranking international teams, the program will feature a three-point shooting contest and a slam dunk competition. Teams from seven different countries will be participating, and the high level of competition is guaranteed—it’s enough to mention that several players from Orange1 Basket Bassano, who will be competing in Debrecen, were silver medalists with the Italian U17 national team at the World Championships in July.
Sándor Berényi, the sports director of the DEAC Basketball Academy, said that the event’s main goal is to popularize basketball in Debrecen further and eventually allow basketball fans to see the best players of this age group at the Oláh Gábor Street Sports Hall.
“We have put an enormous amount of energy into preparing for this year’s Cívis Cup, and I can confidently say that it will be the most prestigious one to date. We are very keen on creating an internationally prestigious tournament, and I believe we have taken a huge step towards that goal. We’re aiming to engage Debrecen’s basketball fans: we’ll have plenty of players from the world elite of this age group, and we’ve also organized accompanying programs.
The tournament will start on Friday with the quarterfinals and the preliminary round of the three-point shooting contest.
